Focus, Preparation and Efficiency: The Story of Atty. Vanessa Raymundo-Uy

“Best” is a qualification based on subjective quantifiers. Do you define your “best” in units of money earned or time spent with loved ones or levels of personal development? For Vanec, the answer is “Yes.”

For years, the life of Atty. Vanessa Raymundo-Uy, known fondly as Vanec, was a shining example of ambition fulfilled. A cum laude graduate from the University of the Philippines, fourth in her class at San Beda Law School, and a top ten placer in the Philippine Bar Exam, Vanec seemed destined for success. She became a senior partner in a prestigious firm, earning a reputation as a diligent and brilliant lawyer. Yet, behind the accolades and accomplishments lay an untold story of reassessment, rediscovery, and reinvention.

Her journey from relentless pursuit of professional success to embracing a more holistic life is a testament to resilience, priorities, and the power of redefining what truly matters. This is her story.

Law School: A Foundation of Discipline and Dedication

“I’m more diligent than smart,” Vanec humbly shares, despite her stellar achievements. “I appear smart because I prepare.”

In law school, preparation was her mantra. She never walked into a class unprepared, even if it meant sacrificing leisure. “Between going out and preparing for class, I had to prepare first. Very

seldom did I attend class not ready,” she admits. But despite her intense focus on academics, Vanec still carved out moments to build lasting friendships, enjoy dinner outings, and take the occasional out-of-town trip. Her longtime friend and fellow partner at GSE, Atty. Rhea Mangubat, was her classmate in her very first law class.

Her hard work paid off—graduating near the top of her class and placing tenth in the bar exam. These achievements paved the way for her early career goals: working at a law firm, making partner, and being known as one of the best in her field.

Pre-Pandemic: The Relentless Pursuit of Excellence

Vanec’s career was a masterclass in focus. Her life revolved around the singular goal of excelling in the legal profession. “Being a partner was the end goal,” she says. And she achieved it. Her work ethic and commitment were undeniable, earning her a reputation for excellence in every task she undertook. Her dedication to preparation was key to all her achievements.

But the grind took its toll. Long hours stretched into late nights, leaving little time for personal pursuits or relationships. “I would extend my workday until eleven, sometimes resenting the lack of time for myself,” she recalls.

The pre-pandemic version of Vanec was defined by work, with success measured by professional milestones. She was a partner, a mentor, and a respected lawyer. But then the world changed.

The Pandemic: A Turning Point

The pandemic forced the world to pause, and Vanec was no exception. For the first time, she had the space to reassess her life and priorities. A COVID-19 scare involving her husband, Atty. Juy Uy, became a wake-up call. It was a stark reminder of how fragile life could be and what she valued most.

“Before the pandemic, my focus was on being the best lawyer,” she reflects. “But during and after, I realized I didn’t just want to be known as a good lawyer. I wanted to be known as a good daughter, a generous person, someone who finds time for loved ones.”

This shift marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life—a chapter where personal fulfillment was just as important as professional success.

Redefining Success: Work-Life Efficiency

One of the most significant changes Vanec made was adopting what she calls “work-life efficiency.” Rather than extending her work hours into the night, she became more productive within a set timeframe, leaving the office by 7 PM whenever possible. Those two hours between 7 and 9 PM became sacred—dedicated to herself, her husband, or her family.

“I realized you can work shorter hours and still produce the same amount of work. It forced me to become more efficient,” she shares. This deliberate effort to create boundaries allowed her to reclaim time for hobbies, relationships, and self-care.

For Vanec, it wasn’t about achieving a perfect balance but maximizing the time she had in both work and life. “I’d like to believe I still give my best. But now, I have a time limit, and beyond work hours, I focus on myself and the people I love.”

Finding Joy in Mentorship and Self-Development

Vanec’s love for teaching began when she was required to take on a professorial role after placing in the top ten of the bar. “At first, it was just a requirement, but I discovered how much I loved mentoring,” she says. While she eventually left teaching, she carried her passion for guiding others into her role as a senior partner, mentoring younger lawyers.

Outside of work, she rediscovered old hobbies like reading and yoga. Whether it’s practicing a perfect flip turn in swimming or researching techniques to master a new skill, Vanec approaches personal growth with the same diligence she once reserved for her studies. “When I want to achieve something, I put my heart into it. I research, I prepare, and I work slowly toward my goals.”

Holistic Success: A New Definition

Today, Vanec defines success differently than she did in her earlier years. “It’s not just about being good at work anymore,” she says. “It’s about having time to spend with family and loved ones. It’s about being happy and purposeful in all aspects of life.”

She acknowledges that stressful times are inevitable in her profession but has learned to take them in stride. “This too shall pass,” she reminds herself during tough moments. “No lawyer escapes stress, but I know when it’s over, I will have time. It’s all about deliberate effort.”

Goals for the Future: A Life Well-Lived

Looking ahead, Vanec’s goals are centered around family, health, and self-development. She wants to spend more time with her aging parents, travel more with her husband, and continue her yoga and swimming practice. Her short-term goals are simple yet meaningful (reading more books, perfecting her flip turn, and cherishing moments with loved ones).

“Preparing for retirement isn’t just about financial stability; it’s about creating a life I can enjoy with the people I care about,” she explains. “My definition of success now involves all aspects of my life. It’s more holistic.”

An Inspirational Legacy

Vanec’s story is one of transformation. From a driven law student and ambitious professional to a woman who values balance, relationships, and personal growth, her journey is proof that success is not a fixed destination but a dynamic, evolving process.

Her advice to those who find themselves overwhelmed by the demands of life? Shift your mindset. “Don’t just ‘fake it till you make it.’ Instead, face it till you ace it. It’s about finding purpose in what you do. For her, it’s obvious, “There’s a purpose and not just me or me working. It’s not about being the best anymore. I’m doing things because it helps me achieve other things in life. Shift how you define success. It’s not just being good at work, but having time to spend with family and love ones.”

As she continues to inspire those around her, whether as a lawyer, mentor, or family member, Vanec’s story serves as a powerful reminder that true success lies in living a life that’s not just accomplished but also deeply fulfilled. (Interview and write-up by: Zeus Earl Roy D. Custodio Jr.)
